150th Celebrations in Lanark, Scotland
On 1st September 2010 a special Mass was
held in St Mary's to celebrate the arrival of the Daughters of
Charity in Scotland in the town of Lanark 150 years ago. Later a
Liturgy of Thanksgiving was held in local cemetery at the graves of
our Sisters who had served and died in Lanark.

The Daughters of Charity of St Vincent de Paul
arrived in Lanark exactly 150 years on 5th August 1860. The
parishioners of St Mary's parish would like to join in
congratulating the Sisters on this landmark anniversary, and to
thank them for their wonderful work over the past 150
years. The parishioners of St Mary's - and indeed the
townsfolk of Lanark - have countless
reasons to be grateful to the Sisters. Indeed it is
difficult to think of any town in Scotland with more reason to be
grateful in the past 150 years to any religious group.
The Sisters looked after a school, an orphanage and a
hospital at a time when these were not provided by the state. This
on top of their everyday ministry to people in their homes and to
those with special needs. It is a record of which the
Sisters can be rightly proud. The Sisters have now
entered a new phase as St Catherine's is now a Care Home for
elderly Sisters. It is now time for the carers to be cared for by
others. But the Sisters remain an integral part of our
community. Long may the Daughters of Charity of St
Vincent de Paul continue to be with us in Lanark. Congratulations
and best wishes! (Taken from St Mary's Parish Newsletter,
