St Joseph's Hospital
for adults with learning disabilities
was opened
by the Daughters of Charity
in 1924.
In
1999
the big house was sold and St Joseph's Service was born with
residents now enjoying life in their own care homes within the
local community. Recently one of its much-loved, long-serving
staff members,
Winnie Tuohy, was appointed as its first lay director. On
the 19th March 2009, the feast of St Joseph, residents, staff,
family members, representatives of Midlothian Social Work
Department
and Sisters gathered in the local parish church of St Matthew's
for a special Mass celebrated by
Cardinal Keith Patrick O'Brien.
In his homily the Cardinal emphasised that
St Joseph's
Service has much
to be proud of
because of the
85 years of wonderful,
loving
service
it has provided which has been rooted in the values of the
Gospel. As Sr Marie Raw, Provincial, commented "Our
thanks goes also to the many sisters and staff, who have worked
for St Joseph's over the years. Most of all we
want to give special mention to the residents of St Joseph's and their families, who over the
past 10 years have made the transition from the hospital to
community living an exciting adventure and a great success. May
the years ahead be filled with blessings as we journey on
together."
